Lent 2020 – Day 32

I had a great conversation today with a girl friend where we talked about boys. After all, boys are the juiciest topic of conversations when it comes to girls (amen).

This time it was juicy not because there was gossip, but it was real. We talked about the scary fact that the people we love will stay with us for the rest of our lives.

We both had to reckon with the possibility that the feelings we felt for the people we love may never fade. Yet this ‘baggage’ is something we have to acknowledge and carry with us moving forward into the future, and the next guys we date will also have to simply embrace this unrelenting truth. Neither of us could safely promise a future where our feelings for a past partner will simply fade ‘once we meet the right guy’ – like that even exists.

I’m reminded of a post I wrote a while back, where I said that “I think that God’s telling me that there are memories you simply can’t forget because of the way they made you feel.

Feelings are not the most reliable indicator of truth, but when they are present, they are indisputable and undeniably true.

So before all the boys who ever dared to love us amazing ladies, there was the God who first loved. This is the truest truth of love that there ever is and will be.

The reason I know this to be true – and I’d like to think you reading this too would know – is because I felt His love before I could cognitively say into words ‘this is love’. Yet that first feeling was more than enough for me to let me continue in my pursuit of Him many years later and never tiring of the beauty and wonder of being in love with a perfect God, who is love.

Remember: He first loved, so we can love.
